 The Parkwood Prospect

Pros●pect (n) – anticipation; expectation; a looking forward

Good morning Parkwood Hill family,

Thank you for supporting our students and staff as our fifth graders participated in the STAAR last week.  The Texas Education Agency has indicated that preliminary student results will be returned to campuses by April 18.  Once we receive our campus data, we will notify parents regarding their child's performance.

Parents, we have 3 great events coming up in the next 3 weeks, and we'd love to see all of our bulldogs participate.  Working backwards, we have our Spring Social on Friday, April 21 (see flyer here).  This is a huge evening event, sponsored by our PTA, and the kids absolutely love it.  Right now, our PTA is seeking dozens of volunteers to make the Social a success, and we need your help.  If you'd like to read about available jobs, and sign-up to volunteer, please click here.

I'm also happy to announce our upcoming Science Night on Tuesday evening, April 11 from 6:00-7:30 p.m.  Science Night is a completely free, students-only event featuring a free pizza dinner, and fun, interactive science stations.  Paper flyers for this event will be sent home with students this week (click here to view), and we ask that students please RSVP to attend by Friday, April 7.  Every student who attends Science Night will earn 1 House Point, and the house with the most attendees will receive a 25-point bonus for the week.

Finally, this Thursday is Parkwood Hill Spirit Night at McDonald's, and we hope you'll join us at the Park Vista/N. Tarrant location.  When you drive-through or dine-in between 5:00-8:00 p.m., a portion of your purchase will go directly to benefit our students.  We're looking to break the all-time KISD school sales record by selling more than $700 in cookies, and more than $5,000 in drive-through/dine-in store sales.  Please come by and support our bulldogs.  We look forward to seeing you there!

Giving you my "Bulldog Best, Never Less,"

Brad Tyler, Principal

Immunization Clinic, 3:45-5:30 p.m. at Indian Spring Middle School – Passport Health will be conducting a children's vaccination clinic at Indian Springs Middle School, 305 Bursey Road, in Keller.  Parents must attend the clinic with their child.  Various forms of payment/insurance are accepted.  Please click here for more details.  Sixth grade parents, please note that current sixth grade students need three required vaccinations before 7th grade, and will not receive a middle school class schedule until updated shot records have been received.  The required vaccinations are Meningococcal, Booster Tdap, and a second Varicella short.

Thursday, April 6

McDonald's Spirit Night, 5:00-8:00 p.m. – Bring all of your neighbors, friends, and family to the McDonald's location at N. Tarrant/Park Vista this Thursday, and have dinner or a quick snack with us!  We want to set an all-time, KISD school record for McDonald's night sales, and that means we need to sell more than $700 dollars in cookies, and more than $5,000 in drive-through or dine-in sales.  A portion of all receipts will go to our school, and will directly benefit our bulldogs.  In addition, some of your favorite teachers will be selling cookies, so come out and say "Hi!"

KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE

Severe Weather Season - This time of year, thunderstorms can affect our afternoon dismissal.  In the event of severe weather, the safety of our students is our top priority.  If lightning or other adverse conditions are present, all outdoor activities cease, including the loading of buses and the release of students.

In the event of a "Severe Weather Dismissal," all students are held in their homeroom class except those whose parents have signed a severe weather waiver.  Throughout the duration of the weather event, non-waiver students remain in their homeroom class unless a parent enters the building, presents appropriate identification, and physically escorts him/her out of the building.  Once the severe weather subsides, students will once again be allowed to exit the building. If you are interested in more information about Keller ISD's severe weather policy, please click here.

Drive Safe – Please continue to remain vigilant and drive safely during our arrival and dismissal, especially when approaching student crosswalks and street intersections.  As a reminder, cell phone use is illegal while operating a vehicle in school zones, parking lots, and drop-off/pick-up lanes.

Physical Evaluation for Sixth Graders Registering for Athletics – State law requires that UIL Physical and Medical History forms be documented for every student who plans on being in 7th grade athletics.  Parents are asked to have their child's physical completed, and their medical history documented, for submission to Hillwood Middle School by May 1.  Click here to access the required physical evaluation and medical history forms.  These must be completed by a physician.

Vaccination Information for Sixth Graders – Current sixth grade students are required to have multiple vaccinations before 7th grade, and will not receive a middle school class schedule until updated shot records have been received.  The required vaccinations are Meningococcal, Booster Tdap, and a second Varicella shot.  For details regarding upcoming immunization clinics in Keller ISD, please click here.  In addition to the clinics listed in the previous link, an after-school clinic will be held at Indian Springs Middle School on April 4.  Details regarding this clinic can be found by clicking here.

GET INVOLVED

Sign-up to Help with the Spring Social! – Our PTA needs dozens of volunteers to support our Spring Social on April 21.  There are lots of different jobs available, both before and during the event.  For more information, a complete list of opportunities, and to volunteer, click here to visit the online sign-up page.  Please note that all volunteers must successfully pass a Keller ISD Background Check at least one week before serving.

Join our 2017-2018 PTA Executive Board – Our fantastic Parkwood Hill PTA is seeking candidates for the 2017-2018 Executive Board.  Serving on the board is a great way to stay involved in your child's education and be connected with PHIS staff and families.  If you're interested, apply online by clicking here!  You may also access a paper version here.  The deadline to apply is Sunday, April 9, and more information can be requested by contacting nominations@phispta.org.  Thank you for interest!

Register to "Run for Change" - The Annual "Run for Change" 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run, sponsored by Fellowship of the Parks, will take place on Saturday, April 8!  Money raised benefits the counseling departments of Keller ISD, Northwest ISD, and Grapevine-Colleyville ISD; and is used to raise awareness for adolescent suicide prevention.  For more details, view the flyer here.

Collect Box Tops for Education - Collecting Box Tops for Education is a simple and easy way to support our kiddos at Parkwood Hill.  Please clip your box tops, gather them together, and have your student bring them to his/her homeroom teacher.  Our fantastic PTA will take care of the rest!

Register as a Campus Volunteer – Field trips, sixth grade boat races, and Field Day are coming soon!  If you plan to volunteer for these events, or any other campus activities this spring, please make sure you've successfully completed a 2016-2017 KISD Volunteer Application.  Interested parents/guardians must apply online by accessing the application here.
